I love pizza but sometimes I get a queasy stomach after eating it. From what I have found, I am not alone.
There are lots of people that cannot eat pizza without getting a queasy or upset stomach.
They ate lots of pizza as a kid (as many kids do) but now they find that eating one of their favorite foods may have consequences.
So why all of a sudden is pizza causing problems for people and their stomachs? What has changed in their bodies to want to reject pizza?
First lets examine what is on most pizzas or what they consist of:
- Dough which becomes the crust
- Tomato Sauce
- Cheese
- Pepperoni
- Sausage
- Canadian Bacon or Ham
- Black Olives
- Bell Pepper
- Onions
- Mushrooms
- Chicken
- Bacon
- Pineapple
- Should I even mention anchovies (anchovy)?
So these are the most mentioned pizza ingredients (at least in the United States). The chicken and bacon may be a little less popular but they are sometimes used. The chicken is used by many that are trying to watch their calorie intake.
So What Is On A Pizza That My Cause An Upset Or Queasy Stomach?
Lets start with the first ingredient and that is the dough. All real pizzas have a crust and that is usually made from the normal dough. The problem with this is that most pizza doughs are made from highly processed ingredients. This is not good for people that suffer from gluten. Some people are allergic to gluten and do not even know it because their reactions are so mild. So if you can find a Gluten Free Pizza Crust, you are better off.
The next item is the cheese. Cheese is a dairy product. If you are lactose intolerant, this is going to cause you problems. Just like people that may have mild reactions to gluten, some people have mild reactions to dairy products as well. Not everyone has severe lactose intolerance problems.
Pepperoni, sausage, and bacon are all meats that are made from animals. There is a lot of grease in these ingredients. These ingredients alone are sometimes the main culprits for causing an upset stomach. The next time you order a pepperoni pizza, just look at the grease floating on top of the pepperoni. That stuff is going into your body. If it looks nasty, it is! Your body is going to have to try and digest it. As the old joke goes, you don’t need ruffage (roughage), just eat more grease. Yuck!
Some people have a food intolerance problem when they eat onions. This is even though onions are supposed to be good for your stomach and digestion. However, some people cannot tolerate onions in any way.
Mushrooms can be another problem. I for one can tell that my stomach gets a little upset if I eat mushrooms. There is just something about them that do not agree with my digestive tract. I mean come on, mushrooms are from the Fungal Family. They are a fruiting body of fungus that are spore bearing. Look it up. It’s amazing what we put into our bodies. I know, now I have a lot of people that eat mushrooms mad at me but don’t be. Mushrooms are very healthy to eat and they have lots of healing properties as you will see in the video I have attached at the bottom of this article.
Bell peppers are something some people can eat and others not. Many people get indigestion from eating bell peppers. The biggest problem with bell peppers for most people is they keep tasting them hours after they have eaten.
So what about anchovies? This is in another class by itself. For people that like anchovies, they are a breed apart. This is probably one of the most joked about pizza toppings in the world. I have a friend that ordered anchovies on a pizza one time not knowing what they were just because he thought the name was cool. To his surprise, he was eating a little stinky fish on his pizza. So I am going to leave the anchovies discussion for another article.
Types Of Pizza That You Should Be Eating If You Are Suffering From A Queasy Stomach
As mentioned before, chicken is not one of the most common pizza ingredients but it is coming up in the ranks as many people are watching their waistlines and fat intake. Chicken is a great alternative to the pepperoni, sausage, and Canadian bacon, and bacon that goes on a pizza. It has less fat and a good amount of protein. It is a lean source of meat and it tastes good.
A pizza crust that is not highly processed. This is a must so you do not suffer a pizza hangover from a cheap pizza dough.
Use more vegetables than meats. If you can eat onions and bell peppers, these are great ways to fill up the pizza with healthy ingredients. They are healthy vegetables and they taste great (at least to most people).
Try pineapple on your pizza. I see more and more pizzas with pineapple on them these days. You don’t have to put a ton of pineapple or whole slices on your pizza. You can place small pieces throughout for a little tropical taste to your pizza.
Speaking of vegetables, try a vegan pizza. There is nothing that says you have to have meat on your pizza.
I have attached a video from Clean Cuisine and More on how to make a Gluten Free Pizza. This is a great website and I suggest that you join their YouTube channel to keep up to date on their upcoming videos as I did.
