Chocolate Candy Bars Give Me Acid Reflux

candy barsThere is no doubt about it. Chocolate Candy Bars Give Me Acid Reflux. I have learned this lately due to my holiday eating habits. Yes the holiday food gets me into what I like to call eating shape. It’s almost like I am in training for eating. Have any idea what I’m talking about?

It’s due to eating mass amounts of food during the holiday season as I am sure many of you do. It starts with Thanksgiving with a big meal. Let’s be real here. It’s more than a big meal. It is a massive meal. Good ole’ turkey and dressing and lots of bread. That is the way it starts. Then some brownies which are full of sugar and fat and I am on my way to gaining weight.

Then somehow I find myself skipping the gym. Why? I cannot explain it really. Then my eating habits get worse. I start eating an occasional chocolate candy bar. Then the next day I eat another. Then I realize, that this tasty little treat is giving me massive acid reflux. to the point where it lasts most of the day.

This does not help when I eat an occasional fast food meal or some Chinese food at a local buffet either.

I recover by avoiding the candy bars and getting back into better eating habits. As stated on this website, chocolate and other sweets can give you a queasy stomach. It’s one of the very foods you should avoid if you are susceptible to an upset stomach. Even more so for me since acid reflux is now part of the equation.

That is what this article is all about. Just putting out more information on the internet and hopefully it will somehow help someone. That’s what it’s all about. Maybe through my experiences someone will read something that will be of benefit to them. Even if I am the guinea pig.

Happy Holidays Everyone.

Resist Fast Food And Obesity

burger can be linked to fast food and obesityThere are two things that seem to go together and those are fast food and obesity. They usually go hand in hand. At least in the USA. One reason is because America is the fattest nation in the world (source: film documentary Super Size Me by Morgan Spurlock).

Children are introduced to fast food at an early age in the United States. They plan birthday parties at fast food restaurants (actually their parents do the planning) and associate the food and atmosphere of these establishments with normal eating habits. By the time they reach their teens, chances are they are already showing signs of being overweight and maybe even obese.

At this point, the cycle is already in motion.

Not only has the body gotten used to eating fatty foods at an early age that can cause all kinds of diseases ranging from high blood pressure to diabetes but the mind has become accustomed to eating fast food. From here their minds feel the sense of fulfillment when fast food is consumed. In a way these foods have become comfort foods by giving the body a certain satisfaction that cannot be obtained by eating healthier foods. In essence they have become addicted to eating fast food.

Is It Fair?

Now these kids have become adults and are either overweight or even worse, just plain ole’ fat. They have been consuming fast food over the years without a clue that they have been setting their body up for failure.

But is it fair to them?

You may say that people that eat a lot of fast food deserve to be overweight. Maybe this is true but there are other things to consider.

Some people really do not know the repercussions of eating fast food. They really don’t. To some this is just normal food. It is what they grew up on. They saw Mom and Dad eating this food as well as Uncle Charlie and Aunt Susie. So why would they ever think there is anything wrong with eating something as innocent as a hamburger and fries? Plus all of their friends have eaten the same food all those years as well. In their mind fast food is just as normal as an apple or other foods that are considered healthy.

Why Fast Food Leads To Obesity

First of all this is not a shot at the fast food chains. This article is not geared towards trying to ruin their right to fulfill their dream of capitalism. They have every right to prepare the types of food they serve. It’s the choice of all of us to choose whether we want to eat their food.

So with that said, here goes. Fast food is generally filled with FAT. Yes, fat and it is a relatively simple thing to think about. Fat makes you fat. I think that is simple enough. However, I am not just going to say that fast food has fat. On the other hand, fast food contains as much as 3 to 4 times the amount of fat as well as calories than other healthy foods. This adds up especially if you have a desk job and you are sitting on your tail all day.

We have mentioned fat and calories but we have not mentioned the extra fat and calories that are received from things like oil or grease. These can contain additional artery clogging components that can weigh you down (no pun intended).

Moving onto sugar now. Sugar is a big part of the equation of fast food. Almost every fast food restaurant serves a tasty soda on ice with every meal. The worst part of this is that the size of the drinks over the years have gotten much larger. They have not followed the lead of the candy bar makers (have you seen how small candy bars have gotten over the years?). Quite the contrary, the fast food restaurants have kept making the size of the drinks bigger and bigger. The larger the drink, the more sugar it has in it.

Sugar will also make you fat.

Ingesting large amounts of sugar regularly can also lead to diabetes. So while people are super sizing all of their meals (including their drinks), they are just adding more calories and sugar to their diet. Take for instance, McDonald’s lists their calorie, total fat, carbohydrates, protein and sodium for Coca Cola. By the way, this is for the Small Size. There are 150 calories and 40g of carbohydrates just for a small Coke. If you increase to a Large, that is a 160 more calories bringing it to a total of 310 calories. Keep in mind, that is just in a drink itself. We have not added any calories or fat from food.

I used to drink between 4 and 8 cokes a day. So I am glad that I am off soft drinks. This has cut my calorie intake down considerably. This also means that I am not using any type of caffeine. It has probably been a year since I have had some type of soda. One thing I noticed is that McDonald’s does not list the amount of sugar for that Coca Cola mentioned earlier.

Also keep in mind that the 310 calories for the large Coca Cola at McDonald’s is pale in comparison to the even larger drinks you get when you Super Size your meal. Americans have become gluttons. Not only do we want bigger meals but we want larger drinks to wash the heart attack food down our throats. Can you feel your arteries clogging already?

Tick tock, tick tock.

So to sum it up, fast food has more calories, more fat and usually more sugar (the drinks are included in this) than most food. Add more sodium to the mix and you have a recipe for a heart attack (again no pun intended). So to be safe, resist fast food and obesity and eat healthier. Educate yourself on the effects of fast food and turn your life around before it’s too late.

Avoid A Queasy Stomach On Vacation

vacation foodsIt’s time for your vacation. You have probably been planning this vacation for months or maybe even longer. You have dieted and done all the right things for eating to get into your new swimwear. It’s going to be a blast. You are going to have so much fun!

There is just one problem….

You might be sidelined for a good portion of your vacation with a queasy stomach.Yep, it happens to many that go on vacation. They go out of town on vacation and BOOM! Upset Stomach City! Yes it can ruin a good vacation. But you shouldn’t stress about it. Hopefully we can give you a few tips to help you recover quickly from any stomach problems you encounter on your vacation.

Take Your Normal Foods With You

If you are like me and are on a pretty strict  diet, you may want to take a few of your foods with you to avoid any stomach upset. This of course includes mainly dry foods but it can also include things that you drink. For instance, if you are going somewhere and you can take a cooler with you, you may want to carry your own orange juice. Many places (hotels, restaurants, etc.) serve orange juice FROM CONCENTRATE. This can be extremely irritating to the stomach and should be avoided.

Especially if you have kids. You really should not give your child anything that is concentrated when it comes to OJ.

You should look for orange juice that states on the label that it is NOT FROM CONCENTRATE or NEVER FROM CONCENTRATE. It’s right there on the front label. You just have to look for it.

As for the foods you should be taking with you, most likely this will be limited to breakfast foods and snacks. It may be good for you to take the cereal that you prefer and even some fresh fruit if you have a way to keep it fresh and cool.

You here a lot of people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For many, it sets the tone for the whole day. Eat crappy early and feel crappy all day. Eat healthy early and reap the benefits of feeling great and energetic. This way you can get more out of your vacation.

Easy things to include may be something like Quaker Instant Oatmeal that you can heat in a microwave or with some really hot water.

You might want to include cereal bars or dried fruit or some other type of healthy snacks that your stomach can endure.

You will be out of your element on vacation and at the mercy of whatever place you are staying at has to offer or whatever local foods or restaurants are serving. So it’s best to be prepared.

Plus you will probably save a lot of money because of the higher prices you may have to pay for the convenience of it all.

If you are flying to your destination, this option is probably out for you as there are strict flight laws in place.

Do Not Eat Too Much

You may have dieted for a good while leading up to your vacation but chances are that you are going to eat lots of food while you are on holiday. Not only will you be eating more food but you will probably be more inclined to indulge yourself to eat almost anything that is put in front of you because let’s face it, you are on vacation. This is the time to let loose, relax and eat anything you want. Not only anything you want but as much of it as you want.

The foods you will be eating on vacation are likely to be more fatty and can include fried foods. You may be eating healthy at dinner but there is also a good chance that the hollandaise sauce you have on your seafood is loaded with lots of extra calories and fat. And if you are going all out, that probably means dessert too. That means more sugar and fat.

Hey, we have all been there. But there can be repercussions. You could end up with an upset stomach from all of this gorging.

Try and limit your all out eating habits to just a few days on your vacation. Or you could pick one meal of the day to really pig out on. This way, your stomach (and the rest of your body) has time to recover.

Remember, when you eat all of these calorie laden foods, you are not just taking in calories and fat. You are also making changes to your blood pressure and cholesterol. Your whole body is having to work harder because of the amount and types of foods that you may be eating.

Use a little self discipline and your stomach will thank you for it.

Avoid Foods You Have Never Tried

Almost everyone likes to try new things as long as they are within reason. Especially when they are on vacation. They do not want to be stuffy. They want to be adventurous.

That can also go for food. There some really exotic foods in the world and some of them can tear up a stomach in a hurry. Especially if you are eating abroad. You may want to avoid foods that you have never tried before.

You have no idea what this new and exciting food can do to your digestive system. Is a chance it could completely ruin the rest of your vacation?

Is it really worth it?

Who really knows for sure. You may be able to eat almost any type of foods without any problems at all. If that’s the case, then go for it. If you have a stomach that is apt to going haywire with anything that is out of the norm, well then, at all cost, avoid foods you are unsure about.

Remember, you are on vacation and chances are you spent a lot of money to relax and have a good time. It would be a pity to feel sick why you are supposed to be having a good time.

Limit Your Alcohol Intake

Alcohol is a part of lots of people’s vacations. People are just looking to get away and unwind and that often includes a couple of drinks. The problem is a couple of drinks turns into too many drinks. It’s very easy to get too relaxed and all of a sudden a plethora of drinks have entered your system.

When you have a lot to drink, it usually means you will pay the price. Most of the time, that happens the next day in the form of a hangover and a queasy stomach.

It often takes hours before you start feeling better. Plus too many times people feel the urge to eat something nasty to counteract the alcohol and that can just make things worse.

If you consume alcohol on your vacation, drink it in moderation. Not only will it be better for your stomach but it will probably keep you out of trouble.

Carry With You Quick Relief Products

This is your vacation. You don’t have time to play around here. You have worked hard all year and you do not want to miss out on a lot of fun being confined to the bathroom or the bed because of a queasy stomach. So make sure that you have some quick stomach relief products with you just in case the ole’ upset stomach rears it’s ugly head.

A quick fix hopefully will get you back in action and enjoying your vacation again.

I hope that everyone that goes on vacation gets to enjoy it. There is nothing worse than feeling stomach queasiness or feeling downright ill from something you ate or drank. Hopefully some of these tips will help you get the most out of your vacation and avoid a queasy stomach.

It May Take Years To Figure Out What Causes Your Queasy Stomach

ben stillar ibsHave a queasy stomach more often than not? Cannot figure out what is causing it on a consistent basis? To be straight with you, it may take years to figure out what causes your queasy stomach.

Fact is, you may never truly understand what causes your upset stomach problems.

One reason this may take so long to figure out is that you may be eating (or drinking) multiple things that  cause your stomach to experience different levels of stomach queasiness. Another reason is that you will sometimes experience a queasy stomach when you are sick. This is more likely when you are suffering something viral.

Your body also may react to different foods than others. You might not be able to eat those spicy foods like some of your friends. You may have to learn this the hard way. A good example is Ben Stillar when he ate spicy foods in the movie Along Came Polly. That was a funny movie no doubt but a lot of people suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) as Ben did in the movie. It leaves them running to the bathroom as shown in this clip:

I too suffered from IBS. In fact, if I did not have an upset stomach, I would be surprised. This is because I was in a constant state of irritated bowels.

It took me years to really figure out what was consistently causing me to experience queasy stomach symptoms. I knew I would suffer stomach irritation if I ate things like salad, broccoli, corn, okra and fried foods (these are just of few of the things that would upset my stomach). It took medical problems (chest pains) to get me to start eating better. After about a month, I could tell my stomach problems were almost completely gone.

Another month, and it was smooth sailing.

I was 44 years old before I figured out how to eliminate my queasy stomach. It took God slapping me upside the head and waking me up to discover this. The one thing I figured out was that it was not just one thing that caused my queasiness, bloating, and diarrhea but it was really a mixture. I could not eat all of those tasty foods I mentioned previously because I was eating poorly constantly and putting my stomach in constant distress.

When I had no choice but to eat properly, all of this changed.

I realized I could eat things like broccoli, salad and corn as well as okra because my stomach was not irritated anymore. It now had been restored to what seemed like a natural state in my younger days.

If it was not for this wake up call, I would still be eating complete crap food and gaining weight and suffering from IBS and a queasy stomach.

Things are different now. I eat a much healthier diet, I exercise regularly and go running on a consistent basis. My cholesterol has dropped along with my blood pressure. I feel so much better and the best thing of all is that I do not have to go looking for the nearest bathroom shortly after I have eaten.

You may never figure out what causes your stomach problems or it may take years to figure it out. My suggestion (and it is only a suggestion) is to cut out nasty foods like fast food or fried foods. Completely remove unhealthy foods and eat a strict diet for over a month and see if that does not make a difference. Chances are that if you follow these suggestions, you are more likely to eliminate your queasy stomach symptoms that are caused by food. If you have severe stomach issues, please make sure you consult a physician.

Use Process Of Elimination To Determine What Is Causing Your Queasy Stomach

There may be more multiple foods that are causing you to have a queasy stomach. The problem is you are probably eating the same foods over and over and it is hard to determine which ones are causing stomach discomfort.

Another problem is you may be having stomach queasiness due to something that you drank instead of something that you have eaten. It can sometimes be hard to narrow down what is making your stomach upset when you might be eating something along with drinking something that gives you a queasy stomach.

You may be associating your stomach issues with the wrong types of nutrients or food sources. So how do you figure out what is causing your queasy stomach?

By Process Of Elimination Try And Figure Out What Is Causing Your Queasy Stomach

A queasy stomach can be caused by a number of things. It could be due to something you ate or something you drank. It could be due to some kind of sickness. It can be because of something bacterial or viral. If it is something due to being sick, that is pretty easy to figure out. You get over your sickness and the queasy stomach is gone.

If it is due to some type of food or drink, now you have to narrow it down so you can hopefully isolate the culprit.

For me, eating corn or greasy foods are subject to give me an upset stomach. With that stomach upset comes queasiness and possibly even diarrhea. So through time I have figured out that those items are not good for my own digestive system. So I try to eliminate them for as long as possible to avoid any type of stomach problems.

no food or drinkEliminate Certain Foods For A Long Period Of Time

If you have a feeling that a certain food (or drink) is causing stomach upset, eliminate them for a long period of time. Not just a few days but for at least a month or more so you can really tell a difference the next time you consume them.

For example, I had no idea that eating lots of rolls or processed bread was actually causing me to have an upset stomach. Until I started eating whole grain bread on a consistent basis, I never really knew that bread could actually be causing me to have an upset or queasy stomach.

Who knew?

I was always under the impression that bread was OK to eat and would not cause any stomach irritation. What I found out that white bread and other ultra processed foods can cause a delayed upset stomach.

This made it harder for me to put my finger on it.

Reintroducing Foods Or Drinks Back Into Your Diet

Once you have waited a long enough period of time, you can introduce the food or drink that you suspect back into your system. If nothing happens, then you can probably remove that type of food or liquid from the group as a trouble maker for your stomach. However, if the food or drink causes more upset stomach symptoms, then you have more data that is telling you to avoid it.

Also to be safe, if you have a feeling that a drink or some type of food is causing a severe upset stomach, just remove that from your diet completely. You probably don’t have to consume those if you had a severe reaction to it. Just move on and consider it something you want to avoid.

The stomach is a complex part of the body. There is so much going on down there that it has even the best scientists and doctors scratching their heads trying to figure cures or remedies for stomach digestion and upset. So sometimes it is best for you you to know your body and through process of elimination, figure out what is causing your upset or queasy stomach.

Upcoming Articles About Gluten Free Foods And Celiac Disease

gluten free and celiac diseaseI know this website generally caters to people looking for a quick fix r a remedy to a queasy stomach but I really want to address a couple of items in some upcoming articles. The subjects of these upcoming articles will be about Gluten Free Foods and Celiac Disease (sometimes called Celiacs or Nontropical sprue).

Both subjects are of interest to me as I know people that have to eat a gluten free diet first hand. My nephew (really he is a my second cousin but I call him my nephew) suffers from Celiac’s Disease. So I know what his parents went through and how it completely scared them when he started having severe adverse reactions to almost all common foods.

To say that it was a tense time would be an understatement.

I know my nephew has gone through a lot and now in on a Gluten Free Diet. Life is better for him now but for a good while, things were very scary. I will have more details in the coming articles in the future.

Hopefully, I will be able to bring to light some good information on these topics. I am not just planing on giving information but I hope to be able to give some of my relatives’ insight as well.

More and more people are being diagnosed with these stomach disorders and this is causing not only major food chains to add gluten free foods to their stores but also restaurants are getting on board too. It has taken lots of work from parents, doctors and people that are dedicated to finding answers for people that suffer both Gluten and Celiacs for things to change.

For all of their hard work, we salute you.

Cure For Celiac Disease?

Will there be a cure anytime soon for these disorders? I’m not sure if I have an answer for that but medical research is ongoing.

I just know that it is a blessing to be able to eat almost any type of food that I want and not have to worry about getting sick or vomiting. I could not imagine what it would be like to get violently sick after eating something that is common in most people’s diet.

So whether you are already on a diet for Gluten Free Foods or suffering from Celiac Disease, I am not sure I will have the answers for you but I will try and find all the info I can to help you. The internet has a lot of information on on these subjects but if I can add anything that my help someone, then I have contributed in some way. Odds are, whatever story I post will somehow relate to someone and that is what it is all about; making the internet (the world) a better place. Please look to the future for these upcoming articles.

Recent Queasy Stomach Stats

I found this very interesting looking over the Google Analytics  stats for QueasyStomach.com. In case you don’t know what Google Analytics is, it’s a free traffic counter provided by Google that gives you in great detail where the traffic is coming from to get to your website. If you have a website and are not using Analytics, you are missing out on a free and powerful program.

california mapCalifornia Leading The Way

The State of California is visiting or looking for queasy stomach information more than any other state at this time. San Diego was the top city followed by San Francisco.

Yes, California is a huge state but I am a little perplexed as to why San Diego is leading the way for the state in reference to stomach queasiness.

I thought San Diego was one of the great places to live. I wonder why they are having so many upset stomachs.

texas mapTexas Bar B Que Anyone?

While California was leading the way, Texas was second looking for information regarding stomach issues. Houston was the leader as the most traffic for the state and is tied with another city which I will reveal shortly.

Could this be from that great Texas Bar B Que? I have to tell you that I have eaten quite a bit of bar b que in my day and the best I ever had was in Dallas Texas. I cannot remember the name of the place but I do remember that they did not have sweet tea. I was a little confused on that because I though Texas was in the South. Everyone knows Southerners love their sweet tea.

new york yankeesNew York Is Third?

While New York is first in a lot of things, they came in third for searching for stomach relief. Maybe there should be less emphasis on stress causing an upset stomach than previously thought. However, New York City was third in the search results but not by far. So scratch what I said about stress. New York City is considered by many to be the stress capital of the world. They are also known for the New York Yankees, Wall Street, and unfortunately 911.

New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world and you can buy different foods from vendors on the street. They have great ethnic restaurants and their nightlife goes on for hours.

Let’s not forget about Lady Liberty. Is she holding up the torch as a symbol for heartburn? I kid – I kid.

chicago bears jerseyLove That Chicago Pizza?

Chicago is known for their pizza for sure. People I know that have visited there say the best pizza either comes from Chicago, New York or San Francisco. They are also home to the Chicago Bears. Chicago happens to be the other city that is tied with Houston for having the most searches that are trying to remedy a queasy stomach.

Maybe it’s all of the heavy foods like bratwurst and other heavy meats that George Wendt  from Cheers and the late Chris Farley used to eat on SNL when they portrayed the Bears Fans in one of the most popular skits ever. You remember the words don’t you?

Da Bears!

Chicago is also known for the The Chicago Bulls that won six NBA titles with who many consider the greatest basketball player ever and that is Michael Jordan. It has been a decade since Michael Jordan has played in the NBA and still his products sell like hotcakes. Just this past Christmas, Nike released the Air Jordan Concords and there were riots that broke out just to get these shoes. Police had to be brought in and several people were injured.

Michael Jordan is the brand.

Anyway, who knows what is causing stomach problems in each individual area of the United States? I would bet though that most of it is due to overeating or eating something nasty or greasy. In fact it’s probably both.

I’ll Have The Crap Burger With Cheese And A Large Order Of Fries

Are you about to order another Crap Burger With Cheese and one of those grandiose orders of large fries? Have you been getting an upset or queasy stomach from eating crap food like this lately?

I know, that’s more than one question – but is it true?

Many people continue to eat fast food and they do not consider the consequences. Their eating habits have steadily declined and they do not realize that the food they are eating is causing them more problems than just an upset stomach or an uneasy queasiness in the gastrointestinal department.

Is this you? Again, another question. But does this describe you? Be honest with yourself. This website is not just about telling you why you might be having a queasy or upset stomach, it is also about trying to educate on how to change things in your life so you do not keep experiencing the same stomach problems over and over.

So we will delving into a greater discussion of fast food and how it can change more than just your stomach  issues or an increasing waistline.

So What Are The Consequences Of Eating Fast Food?

There are many effects that fast food can cause people. Here are just a few of them:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Irritated Stomach
  • Increased Risk Of Diabetes
  • Cirrhosis Of The Liver
  • Weight Gain
  • Mental Distress

Let’s start with high blood pressure (the silent killer). Eating a lot of fast food can really put your body into extra danger. this is especially true if fast food is eaten on a regular basis. One reason is this can increase your risk of developing high blood pressure. Many people already are genetically inclined to develop high blood pressure but eating vast amounts of fast food only makes things worse. The amounts of sodium alone in fast food is enough to make a person’s blood pressure shoot up.

High Cholesterol is another reason to avoid fast food. It can a lot of times be accompanied by high blood pressure. As I am writing this, it has been almost two years since I was diagnosed with both but I made a change in my diet and now both are at normal levels. The feeling of both of these issues hitting me at one time was enormous. I had been feeling ill for almost a year and had no idea that I was at dangerous levels and was at risk of actually dying. When I changed my diet and started exercising more, my life changed for the better.

burger and fries

Eating lots of fried foods and fast food on a consistent basis can cause an irritated stomach. Some people get some kind of stomach irritation if they eat fast food at all. It does not have to be on a consistent basis. Most fast foods are prepared with animal fats in the grease (oil). Many companies today are changing to a healthier cooking oil but the stomach has a harder time digesting something with grease in it than foods that do not. Plus most fast food has a lot of fat in general. A Quarter Pounder With Cheese from McDonald’s has 510 calories and 26 grams of fat. It  gets a an “F” on the nutritional grade at CalorieCount.com. Your stomach has to work overtime to digest food like this.

Keep eating unhealthy and see what happens to your health. Soon you will be super sizing everything and adding more sugar to your diet. The sugar can be found in the sodas and deserts. This gives you a greater risk of developing diabetes.

In the movie called Super Size Me by Morgan Spurlock, there was an amazing fact brought to light when he ate McDonald’s food for a solid month. One of the doctors interviewed stated that many people that have been consistent consumers of fast food have developed the beginning signs of cirrhosis of the liver. This is shocking and should be a revelation to eat a salad instead of that Big Mac (or that Whopper With Cheese – do not want McDonald’s to think we are picking on them).

So how can eating a crap burger cause mental distress? This is easy. We are able to combine the last two points on this. You can easily get mental distress from the weight gain of eating poorly. Add some ill health effects and some visits to the doctor for your cholesterol and blood pressure and you can easily distressed or even depressed. It’s a domino effect. Why do you think all of those workout machines sell so well each year.  I bet you have heard people say “at least I have my health” before. They mean it. You lose your health and it can send your brain into a depressive tailspin.

Eating Healthier Can Eliminate A lot Of Your Stomach Problems

Wise up and eat healthier. A lot of your stomach problems come from something you ate or may have drank. Your diet really does make a difference. You should really try and eliminate fast food from your diet. At least try and reduce it significantly. The effects of eating fast can be long term that may put you on medication or possibly even death. We have not even discussed heart disease but yes, that is in the equation as well.

So eat something healthy and put down that crap burger and fries. You will be around a lot longer to enjoy your friends and family.

Why Does Corn Upset My Stomach?

corn and a upset stomachYou may be asking yourself, why does corn upset my stomach? You are not the only person that has ever asked that question. Many people get an upset stomach or a certain amount of queasiness from eating corn (commonly known as maize). But why is corn such an irritant to the stomach fro some, yet for others it’s not a big deal?

Corn Not Fully Digested

To understand corn and the effects it has on the stomach, first you need to understand why it is not always fully digested. First of all, the seed of the corn is pretty much the corn that you eat itself. If you don’t believe that is to be true, just throw some fresh corn kernels in your front yard and wait a few weeks. You will see lots of stalks starting to grow in no time (granted it’s not winter time).

The stronger outer layer of the corn kernel is called the bran coat. It is also called the pericarp. Corn is also considered to be a starchy vegetable. Why is it considered a starchy vegetable? That’s a great question. The reason is that corn is made up of almost 90% starch. At least the endosperm part is and that is the part that makes up most of the kernel itself.

How Does The Pericarp Avoid Digestion?

Corn is made up mostly of cellulose. Keep in mind that cellulose is the main component of the of a kernel of corn. Most peoples digestive system has the ability to break down the sugar that is found in starch release the enzymes needed to break down starch. When these enzymes break down the starch and the sugar that is related with it, it gets released into your bloodstream.

Herein lies the problem.

The enzymes found in your digestive tract cannot fully handle the the sugar that is found in the cellulose and thus the molecules do not get broken down. This is the main reason why the corn does not get fully digested and will pass through your system looking like it did when it went in. This is simply the bodies inability to break down the pericarp (bran coat) of the kernel of corn.

How This Translates To An Upset Stomach

Some people just cannot eat corn. They have problems such as diarrhea and gas and even bloating after eating corn. Some just avoid the tasty vegetable altogether because it gives them so much stomach trouble.  If you are one of the people that cannot eat corn, you may need to avoid it as well.

Some people can eat corn in different ways but just not as it is in the whole kernel form. For instance, some can eat corn as long as it is not whole vernal or if it is ground to be made into a taco shell or nacho chips. They have no problem digesting corn in this form.

Also, check with your doctor to see if you have a food allergy or a food intolerance problem with corn.

sweets and chocolateDo you have a queasy stomach from sweets and chocolate? If so, you are not alone. There are thousands just like you that have indulged in the sinful sweets and now their tummy is suffering from it.

During the holidays, people are subject to over indulging with the so called holiday desserts. This is not uncommon. The problem is that many keep on eating rich desserts throughout the year and their stomachs pay the price. Their waistlines grow because of all of the food they have been eating that is full of  sugar. Not only does sweets and chocolate have a lot of sugar but they can also be high in fat.

When you consume foods that are high in fat and sugar combined, this is a recipe for an upset or queasy stomach.

Now we are not dogs but I want you to think about something. A dog cannot digest chocolate like humans can. Just because we can digest chocolate does not mean that we should not recognize there is something in chocolate that we need to pay attention to when it relates to digestion and our overall diet. If there is a food that a dog cannot digest (chocolate), then that should be a red flag to us even if chocolate does not cause us the same side effects.

Slightly Off Topic For a Bit On Chocolate

By the way, I am serious when I say this, keep chocolate away from your dog. Some dogs have died eating chocolate.  This is because they can get Theobromine Poisoning. dogs just cannot metabolize chocolate fast enough.

I have a pet that got into a chocolate cheese cake a couple of years ago. The vet said it was a good thing that we took our dog to them when we did or he would have passed away. The vet told us that many of our dog’s organs had almost completely shut down. It was a traumatic time.

Shortly after, our dog went blind and he turned diabetic. So now he has to get insulin shots twice a day. He’s a trooper though and is still loving as ever.

Types Of Chocolate And Sweets

Maybe the normal sweets and chocolate desserts are not a problem for you. However, sweets can come in many shapes and sizes and if you consume too much of them, your shapes and sizes will grow.

Candy on one had is packed full of sugar. Many of us consumed lots of candy when we were kids and our stomachs had no problem digesting it. It seemed like we could eat anything as a kid and it was very seldom that we felt any type of queasiness from it. I ate so much candy as a kid, I am surprised I have a tooth left in my head. Luckily, I was taught to brush my teeth and how important it was for fighting cavities.

You can get sweets and chocolate through drinks as well. Hot chocolate is one example. Then there is chocolate milk, Nestles Quick, and many more drinks that contain chocolate.

A lot of people like to get their chocolate fix from candy bars. It’s so convenient to grab one of these with a soda for a quick snack when you are at the store or a gas station. Then it becomes a habit. People want to get a quick sugar fix to make them feel better only to have a sugar crash a couple hours later. These are the ones that usually spend quite a lot of money of Red Bull and other Energy Drinks every year.

Premium Chocolate is one of the ways that people get sucked into partaking in sweets. There are tons of ads on television that seduce people into purchasing their chocolate brand or brands. You know the usual commercial. They slowly pour the chocolate in front of you and even show chocolate pouring on top of other chocolate. Then they show the packaging and it looks so great that it makes people want to jump out of their chair and go buy some chocolate. Don’t think it works?

Think again.

Our nation buys so many self indulging products like chocolate, fast food, etc. just from the seductive commercials on T.V. and radio. There is no wonder that the U.S. is one of the most obese nations in the world just from all of the crap we put into our bodies.

Then we wonder why we have an upset or queasy stomach.

Fast Food Documentary Super Size Me By Morgan Spurlock

super size me documentary with morgan spurlockOne of the best sources of information on this is Morgan Spurlock’s documentary called Super Size Me. In this documentary, Spurlock eats nothing but McDonald’s food for a whole month. The effects that this had on body from eating fast food was shocking. He ate at McDonald’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner (supper). Every meal for a whole month, Spurlock ate fatty foods that included Big Mac’s, Quarter Pounder With Cheese, Chocolate Shakes and more. You name it, he ate it if it was on the menu.

During this month long eating binge, Morgan Spurlock started to develop recurring stomach problems and his health declined at a noticeable rate. Enough about that for now. I’ll save this for another complete article at another time.

This article is supposed to be about sweets and chocolate but just in case you are interested in the Super Size Me movie, you can purchase a copy of it at Amazon if you want a copy around to watch at anytime or you can watch it for FREE at YouTube in the video below (but there is more to this article so please do not forget to read the rest of the article):

Back On Track About The Sweets And Chocolate

So getting back to the sweets and chocolate discussion and how it can relate to a queasy stomach, just remember these important things.

One is that the nutritional value offered by chocolate cakes, candy and other general sweets is almost zilch. Secondly, you are almost guaranteed to gain weight if you have the average metabolism. This is especially true if you eat sweets and chocolate on a regular basis.

Here is a little fact that most of you probably do not know. Chocolate has a high inflammatory factor. This is especially true for milk chocolate. There are reports that state that dark chocolate is better for you. So keep that in mind.

Fight off these urges and eat something healthy like a piece of fruit or vegetables. I know it does not sound exciting but give it a try. After a while, you will start to learn just how beautiful the natural food is that has not been processed like cakes and other tempting desserts. You will get a better form of sugar and your body will be able to break the food down a lot better.

Tell Your Friends Thanks But No Thanks

Some of you have friends that just always seem to nudge you in the wrong direction. They do not see that they are doing you harm but they are. They don’t see that it’s a big deal that eating a dessert could cause weight gain or cause any stomach problems. Somehow they say things like “you have to live” or “you gotta splurge some time”. The next time you hear one of your friends say this, just stop for a moment and look at them.

Really, look at them. Look at their whole body. Are they in shape? Are they overweight? Don’t get the wrong idea here. I am not calling anyone fat or anything like that. But really, look them over and I would bet you 8 out of 10 times, the people that are saying this to you are overweight. They may not be overweight by much, but chances are, they need to lose a few pounds  or go running and they would be much better off health wise. And guess where they might be getting their extra weight from. Wanna guess?

Could it be sweets and chocolate and other types of candy or desserts filled with sugar and/or fat?

Sometimes you just have to break things down and be real with yourself and even your friends. Don’t let them pull you down. Stay strong and resist these sweets and chocolate sinsations and you will help avoid a queasy stomach.
